A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. Unlike gingivitis, which is often the precursor to periodontitis (gum disease), periodontitis is not reversible and must be treated regularly in order to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Gingivitis occurs when plaque is allowed to accumulate on the teeth causing irritation to the gums. If not removed by regular brushing and flossing, plaque will harden and form into calculus.

If left untreated, the toxins and bacteria in the calculus will cause the gums to pull away from teeth creating gum pockets, thereby exposing the tooth’s roots, bone and connective tissue to infection and decay. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

At Ace Dental Center in Chicago, Lombard, Hoffman Estates, Rockford IL, we provide gentle yet thorough periodontal treatment using the latest techniques and technology available in modern dentistry. These advancements enable our dentist and hygienists to provide pain-free procedures using less invasive methods and promote faster healing for amazing results.
